Founders

Caminos de Acción was founded in 2012 by Laura Hastings and Blanca Escoto de Benitez. These women met during Blanca’s Fulbright Scholarship at the University of Wyoming. Since their meeting, these ladies have created CdA and continue to work tirelessly on helping as many individuals within the Los Tehuistes community as possible.

Laura currently serves as the President of the Board of Directors.  Blanca has served on the board and continues to support CdA efforts in Los Tehuistes.

iris aragon

School Counselor | Green Dot Public Schools

Iris, as a native Salvadoran, is passionate about CdA’s work as she has witnessed how social disparities and lack of resources directly affect her home country. Now living in the U.S., Iris works as a high school counselor in South LA to empower youth to follow their dreams, be lifelong learners and global citizens. Iris has a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Master of Arts in Educational Counseling from the University of La Verne.

 

Manuel Dominguez

Executive Director & Knowledge is Power Program Director

Manuel is from La Paz, El  Salvador, and has a degree in International Relations from the University of El Salvador. His experience working with the community of Chiquimula, Guatemala inspired him to give back in his community and country. Manuel has served as Program Director since 2014 and as Executive Director since 2019.

 

Fredy Antonio Servellon Estrada

Farming for the Future Director

Fredy is extremely passionate about agroecology and is currently studying Agroecological Engineering at the Lutheran University of El Salvador. At his home he owns chickens, an orchard, and actively participates in the production of tilapias within Los Tehuistes. A part from his responsibilities for the Farming for the Future program, he coordinates with the Scholarship committee and the Scholarship administration. Nevertheless, in his free time, he enjoys playing futbol (soccer) every Sunday,  and loves spending time with his beautiful wife and two amazing daughters. Once he graduates, Fredy plans to implement what he learned throughout the Los Tehuistes community.

 

Morgan Gramlich

Social Media Coordinator &  Author of Blogs

Morgan grew up and currently lives in Lander, Wyoming and is extremely passionate about CdA’s  work. She recently graduated from the University of Montana with Dual Degrees in Spanish and International Politics as well as a minor in Latin American Culture and History. She hopes to utilize her connection through the community, and experience with social media to help grow and spread CdA as well as keep the public up to date with CdA’s work.

 

Laura Hastings

Board President / Caminos de Accion (CdA)

Laura's studies and teaching career have taken her around the globe, including El Salvador, where she co-founded Caminos de Acción in 2012 with Blanca Escoto de Benitez. She has a Masters in Education from UCLA and currently teaches middle school English in her home state of Wyoming. As president, she works with her team to guide CdA through a lens of critical pedagogy in community organizing at the grassroots level.

 

Juan Carlos flores Hernandez

Scholarship Student Staff

At 28 years of age, Juan Carlos has been an active member of our Scholarship Program since 2020. He is currently working towards his doctorate in medicine at the National University of El Salvador. In his free time, when he’s not working or studying, he enjoys exercising and spending time dedicating himself to his organic orchard and family. In addition to helping organize religious events. In the future, he hopes to become a general practitioner with the goal to eventually become a surgeon. Eventually, he hopes to found a community clinic for the Los Tehuistes community. He also

My future goal is to become a general practitioner and then specialize as a surgeon, also one of my goals is to found a community clinic in the community of the Tehuiste in order to help the people of that community, another goal is to be able to travel to the United States legally and be able to know that great nation.

 

laura o’neil

Assistant Director, Grants & Foundation Relations | University of Missouri - Columbia

Laura is an advocate for grassroots participatory approaches to development that inspire people to use their agency for change. She is an AmeriCorps VISTA alum and currently works to improve lives through education in her role at Columbia College.  Laura has a Master of Public Affairs, a graduate certificate in public health, and Bachelor of Arts in International Studies from the University of Missouri.

 

Violeta stauffer Rodriguez

Multicultural Marketing Specialist / The Iola Register

Violeta is a Salvadoran marketing professional who has been a CdA volunteer and board member since 2015. For Violeta,  it’s been a very rewarding experience to see the impact each project has in her home country and in the community that CdA serves. She is excited to continue working for CdA in their mission to promote a brighter future in El Salvador.
