UN Sustainable Development Goals and Our Impact
Ever since the founding of the United Nations in 1945, El Salvador has been an active participant in maintaining global peace and prosperity. Nevertheless, with increasing poverty levels and the undeniable threat of climate change, 17 Sustainable Development Goals were adopted in 2015 to be completed by 2030 for 193 participating countries in the United Nations. These goals are aimed as a “shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future”. According to the UN this is a “call for action by all countries - poor, rich and middle- income - to promote prosperity while protecting the planet. They recognize that ending poverty must go hand-in-hand with strategies that build economic growth and address a range of social needs including education, health, social protection, and job opportunities, while tackling climate change and environmental protection”.
The El Salvadorian government has taken it upon themselves to place these Sustainable Development Goals at forefront of their public policy. In order to achieve an efficient and effective implementation process the country has formed an implementation team comprised of 70 State institutions. The adoption of these goals has been articulated as not just a government Agenda, but a state commitment. Thus, the government partners with the private sector and civil society to have everyone involved.
El Salvador is in position No. 3 with regard to the progress of SDG indications. The country has specified nine goals:
End Poverty
Zero Hunger
Health and Well-Being
Quality Education
Gender Equality
Clean Water and Sanitation
Climate Action
Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions
Partnerships to Achieve the Goals
Part of our commitment is to assist El Salvador in the completion of these goals. Through our programs we assist in the development of twelve of these goals:
No Poverty
Zero Hunger
Good Health and Well-Being
Quality Education
Gender Equality
Clean Water and Sanitation
Decent Work and Economic Growth
Reduced Inequalities
Sustainable Cities and Communities
Responsible Consumption and Production
Climate Action
Partnerships for the Goals
Each of our programs encompasses several of these goals. Our Knowledge is Power Program promotes Quality Education, Gender Equality, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Reduced Inequalities, and No Poverty. Meanwhile our Farming is the Future encapsulates Good Health and Well-Being, Zero Hunger, Sustainable Cities and Communities, Responsible Consumption and Production, and Climate Action. Finally, our Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene program contributes to Sustainable Cities and Communities, Responsible Consumption, and Production, Clean Water and Sanitation.
Nevertheless, we would be unable to attain these goals without Partnership for the Goals working with other Nonprofits and Foundations to accomplish these goals. Check out our specific programs for more details on how we focus on these Sustainable Development Goals and how our work impacts the completion of these!
